The SharkWise Project

A fully immersive marine biology internship programme based in South Africa.

About

Dive into an unforgettable
shark experience!

The SharkWise Project Marine Internship is based in Umkomaas, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Our internship is tailored to give students and passionate ocean lovers the hands-on field experience needed to start a successful career in marine biology. The interns pay a program fee to cover the boat expenses, fuel, accommodation, and equipment for continuous data collection. While the interns gain knowledge and experience in collecting scientific data, they also assist with the fieldwork of Masters and PhD students from Stellenbosch University.  Join us for an unparalleled journey into the depths of marine discovery!

Marine Internship

Welcome to the SharkWise Project Marine Internship, situated in breathtaking South Africa! Our marine internship invites you to explore Aliwal Shoal, one of the top shark diving sites in the world, through the lens of a field scientist. Our program combines hands-on experience, cutting-edge research, and a dedicated team working towards a sustainable future for our oceans. Explore the logistics of the internship, get to know the team, read about the research projects we're currently engaged in, and consider this your invitation to join our team at Aliwal Shoal. Our Research Station

Our research station is nestled in the coastal beauty of Umkomaas, a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We conduct our research on the Aliwal Shoal Hope Spot, a hotspot for marine megafauna and a bucket list spot for enthusiastic scuba divers! Aliwal Shoal has an unparalleled diversity of marine megafauna, featuring whales, dolphins, manta rays and an abundance of sharks. This underwater destination serves as our classroom, providing a unique setting for interns to explore and contribute to marine conservation.

Tayte Stefaniuk, Intern (2024).

For a plethora of reasons, I will cherish the time I spent with the SharkWise Project for the rest of my life.

Firstly, the diving at the Aliwal Shoal was surreal. Its biodiversity is unparalleled to any of my past experiences. So many of my childhood dreams were fulfilled within such a short period of time. I had a multitude of close, intimate encounters with apex predators like sharks as well as gentle giants like humpback whales. Moreover, the conditions provided me with an opportunity to develop my diving skills further. I also developed other skills that are beneficial to my career in marine biology such as underwater photography and software utilization. But most importantly, the people were top tier. I was able to expand my network within the field and form strong friendships.
